ESIEA Internship: A Month Later!

It’s been a month since we were joined by Christopher and Lohann. Time really flies!

They've been very busy during their stay in Ibara so we thought we'd catch up with them to see what they've been up to.

クリストファーとロアンが加わってから、もう1ヶ月が経ちました。時間が本当に早いですね！彼らは今、井原でとても忙しくしているので、最近どうしているかを聞こうと思っていました。

Are you feeling settled in now? For the past 3 weeks, you have been staying in Bisei! Does it feel different being up in the mountains instead of Central Ibara?

もう日本に慣れていきましたか？　ここ3週間、備前に滞在しているとのことですが、中央井原ではなく山の中にいると、どんな感じですか？

Christopher: It really feels like time is flying extra fast here （あっちゅうま）! I got to discover many aspects of the Japanese culture, especially the local culture here in Ibara. Bisei has been a great experience since we have been in total autonomy for the first time since we started the internship. Lohann and I loved to go out on night walks to see the starry sky; it is really an exceptional sight. Being up there in the mountains does feel quite different as it is quite difficult to move around without a car, so we only went out at night when it was colder and more bearable for us.

クリストファー：本当に時間が「あっちゅうま」に過ぎていく感じがします！日本の文化、特に井原のローカルな文化に触れることができて、とても貴重な体験になっています。美星での生活は、インターンが始まってから初めて自分たちだけで生活するということで、とてもいい経験になりました。ロアンと一緒に、夜に星空を見ながら散歩に行くのがすごく楽しかったです。あの星空は本当に感動的でした。山の上だと車がないと移動が難しくて、日中は暑さもあってなかなか外に出られなかったので、涼しい夜にだけ出かけていました。

Lohann: I’m certainly more at ease now ! 

It’s certainly more pratical to be in the city, but it’s nice to be able to see every star in the sky, and walk in a nature environment at night. The sky is indeed very clear ! 

ロアン：今はだいぶリラックスできるようになりました！

街にいる方が確かに便利ではありますが、山の上では夜になると満天の星空が見られて、自然の中を歩けるのが本当に気持ちいいです。空がとても澄んでいて、星がくっきり見えるのが印象的でした！

Do you think that there are any differences between living with a Japanese family compared to your own?

日本の家族と一緒に暮らすのと、自分の家族と暮らすのでは、何か違いがあると思いますか？

Christopher: Definitely yes! Having been with a family that loves going out every day of the week, it felt quite different compared to my own family. In France I rarely go out with my family and I mostly hang out with friends, but here it was the opposite! There were also some aspects of the culture that I discovered while living with my first host family; it really was an enriching experience.

クリストファー：はい、間違いなく違いがありました！毎日外出が大好きなホストファミリーと一緒に暮らしていたので、自分の家族との生活とはかなり違いました。フランスでは家族と外出することはあまりなく、主に友達と出かけることが多いのですが、ここではその逆でした。また、最初のホストファミリーと一緒に暮らしている間に、日本の文化の新しい一面にも触れることができて、本当に貴重な体験でした。

Lohann: In my family it’s important to wait that everyone is served before eating, but it does not seem to be a rigid rule here. 

ロアン：私の家では、みんなに料理が行き渡ってから食べ始めるのが大事なんですが、日本ではそこまで厳密なルールではないように感じました。

What was it like staying with your host families compared to the Pension Comet?

ホストファミリーとの生活は、ペンションコメットでの生活と比べてどうでしたか？

Christopher: As I said above, it was very different as we were left on our own for the most part. Hence, we had to come up with ideas of things to do in our free time. One thing that I personally appreciated was that I was able to create links with the staff working at Pension Comet, and we spent great moments together!

クリストファー：先ほども言ったように、ペンションではほとんど自分たちで自由に行動していたので、とても違いました。その分、自由時間をどう使うかを自分たちで考える必要がありました。個人的に良かった点は、ペンションコメットのスタッフの方々と仲良くなれたことです。いろいろなお話ができて、素敵な時間を過ごせました！

Lohann: It was definitely more lively. Especially by the end, we were often the only two persons in the hotel, and throughout our stay at Pension Comet we only talked to the employees and the owner. 

ロアン：全体的に、ホストファミリーとの生活の方が賑やかでした。ペンションコメットでは、滞在の後半になると私たち2人しか宿泊者がいないことも多くて、話す相手はスタッフさんやオーナーさんくらいでした。

What is the hardest thing about living in Japan?

日本で暮らす中で一番大変なことは何ですか？

Christopher: I feel like the hardest thing about living in Japan when you are living alone is getting to know people.

I felt quite privileged to be living with a host family since I got to meet many people and interact with them regularly, and at no point I felt alone.

Compared to when I spent one week alone in Japan, it feels much better to be surrounded by people you know.

クリストファー：一人で日本にいると、やっぱり一番大変なのは人とのつながりを作ることだと思います。ホストファミリーと一緒に住んでいたおかげで、たくさんの人と出会って交流することができ、全く孤独を感じることはありませんでした。でも、以前一人で1週間過ごした時は、知り合いがいない中で過ごすのはやっぱり大変だなと感じました。

Lohann: Apart from the language, a hard thing is to sit in a tradionnal room, with no chairs. 

ロアン：言語以外だと、やっぱり椅子のない和室で座ることが一番大変でした。

Do you think your Japanese has improved? Have you had any mishaps or miscommunications?

日本語は上達したと思いますか？ 何か失敗やコミュニケーションの行き違いはありましたか？

Christopher: I do think that my Japanese has improved on some parts! I got to learn some local expressions, and I feel like my conversational skills also improved a bit.

クリストファー：多少は上達したと感じています！特に地元の言い回しや表現をいくつか覚えることができて、会話力もちょっとは上がったかなと思います。

Lohann: I certainly have learned a lot of “pratical Japanese” ! Thankfully I did not have any severe miscommunication (probably because when I miscommunicate it becomes unintelligible ^^’)

ロアン：実用的な日本語をかなり覚えたと思います！幸い、大きな行き違いはなかったです（たぶん、うまく伝わらなかった時は、もう何を言ってるのか分からなくなるレベルだったからかもです笑）

Have you had any interesting experiences this week? What’s the best thing you’ve done so far?

今週、何か面白い経験をしましたか？ 今までで一番良かったことは何ですか？

Christopher: The best experience I have had was the traditional clothes wearing experience. It was impressive to see the material and quality of the Haruma and Haori. After looking at the pictures multiple times, it made me want to get my own Japanese clothes as they look exceptionally cool and great.

We also got to visit a traditional Japanese garden while wearing those clothes, it almost felt like we were transported back in time.

クリストファー：一番印象に残っているのは、伝統的な和服を着る体験です。春馬や羽織の素材や質感を間近で見ることができて、とても感動しました。写真を何度も見返しているうちに、自分でも和服が欲しくなってしまいました！見た目もすごくかっこよくて素敵でした。それに、和服を着たまま日本庭園を見学することができて、まるでタイムスリップしたような気分になりました。

Lohann: The most interesting thing we did was Kyuudou, where we praticed a form of archery more closely related to art than sport. You have to follow form of ritual, and the primary goal is not to hit the target, but to calm your heart. 

I think the best thing we’ve done is visiting the Denshuu museum. I really liked a lot of the statues because they are so colorful ! 

ロアン：一番面白かったのは、やっぱり弓道の体験ですね。スポーツというよりは芸術に近いもので、形式や所作に意味があって、的に当てることよりも、心を落ち着かせることが大切と教わりました。

一番良かったことは、伝習館の見学です。色鮮やかな像がたくさんあって、とても気に入りました！

Christopher and Lohann are on the final stretch of the internship with only 2 weeks left! After spending time in Bisei, the two of them are back in Central Ibara, experiencing what is left of the city and this part of Japan, before they complete the programme on the 22nd August.

クリストファーとロアンのインターンシップも、残すところあと2週間となりました！

美星での滞在を終えた二人は再び井原市中心部に戻り、8月22日のプログラム終了までの間、この地域や街での残りの時間を満喫しています
