Englishland 2025!

Every year Ibara City puts on "Englishland". This year, our interns from ESIEA talk to us about what it is about and what it was like. Read on to find out more!

井原市では毎年「イングリッシュランド」を開催しています。 今年は、ESIEAから来ているインターンたちが、イングリッシュランドがどんなイベントなのか、そして参加してどうだったかを教えてくれました。ぜひ読んでみてください！

We heard that you joined an event on Sunday. What was it?

― 日曜日にイベントに参加されたそうですね。どんなイベントでしたか？

Last Sunday, there was an event called “Englishland”. It is an event organized for the sole purpose of having fun while practicing English! The participants were Japanese school children from elementary schools and junior high schools in Ibara, and this year, 21 students came to participate!

先週の日曜日に、「イングリッシュランド」というイベントが開催されました。

これは、英語を楽しく学ぶことを目的としたイベントで、井原市内の小中学生を対象に毎年行われています。

今年は21人の子どもたちが参加してくれました！

Every year, the English teachers from Ibara gather their strength and come up with an entertaining program from 10am to 3pm, which includes games, crafts, and a lunch made up of food from other countries!

毎年、井原市内の英語の先生たちが力を合わせて、午前10時から午後3時までゲームやクラフト、そして世界の料理のランチを含む楽しいプログラムを考えています。

From the name, was it what you were expecting? 

「イングリッシュランド」という名前から想像した通りの内容でしたか？

Honestly, we did not expect to have that much fun. We were expecting a more “scholarly” approach to English learning so it was a very lively and heartwarming event for both of us.

正直、こんなに楽しいイベントだとは思っていませんでした。もっと「勉強！」という感じの内容を想像していたので、予想以上ににぎやかで、心温まるイベントでした。

After thinking about it, Lohann reckons that it was the same as when he did a week-long summer English camp 4 years ago, but at elementary school level instead of high school level. He found both events similarly fun!

振り返ってみると、ロアンにとっては4年前に参加した1週間のサマーイングリッシュキャンプと似ていて、それの小学生バージョンという印象でした。どちらもすごく楽しかったです！

And what did you do?

当日はどんなことをしましたか？

On the day, we played many different games, but the best thing was that the students were all using English and practicing their language skills while playing! It was also great to see everyone collaborate to win in some of the games, like the egg-and-spoon race.

いろいろなゲームをしましたが、特に嬉しかったのは、子どもたちがゲームを通して英語を使っていたことです！例えばスプーンで卵を運ぶゲームでは、みんなで協力して勝つために頑張っていて、その姿がとても印象的でした。

Games aside, there was also a placemat-making activity where everyone made their own placemat. Everyone was super friendly and helped each other to make their own decorated placemat. We even started asking each other to sign the placemats, so we got to see each other’s designs and take home a nice memento of who was there!

ゲーム以外にも、オリジナルのランチョンマットを作るクラフトの時間がありました。みんなとてもフレンドリーで、助け合いながら素敵な作品を仕上げていました。最後には、お互いのランチョンマットにサインをし合ったりして、思い出として持ち帰ることができました！

There was a chance to talk freely, but unfortunately, the kids reverted to Japanese.

自由に話す時間もあったのですが、そこでは残念ながら日本語に戻ってしまう場面もありました。

How were the kids?

子どもたちの様子はどうでしたか？

The kids were very enthusiastic about the games and activities, it was particularly great to see everyone smile and have fun. Some were a bit more shy than others, but at the end of the day it was a great opportunity for cultural exchange for everyone and we all had fun!

どの子もとても元気で、ゲームやアクティビティを楽しんでいました。

特にみんなの笑顔がたくさん見られたのが嬉しかったです。

少し恥ずかしがり屋の子もいましたが、最終的にはみんなで楽しむことができ、良い国際交流の機会になったと思います！

What did you enjoy the most?

一番楽しかったのは？

The part that we enjoyed the most as interns in Ibara was seeing all those kids gather in an event using a language they may not be comfortable with, but still manage to make the most of their knowledge and just enjoy the moment. Everyone was eager to learn and get out of their comfort zone (including us), so it was great!

インターンとして一番楽しかったのは、英語に自信があるわけではない子どもたちが、それでも勇気を出して自分の知っている英語を使いながら楽しんでいた姿を見られたことです。

学ぶ意欲があり、みんなが自分の「安心ゾーン」から一歩出てチャレンジしていたのが印象的でした。私たち自身もそうでした！

We also really enjoyed making our own placemats.

そして、ランチョンマット作りもとても楽しかったです。

Would you recommend the day to the children of Ibara City?

English is known as the international language nowadays, and therefore we think that it is essential for people to know and understand the language. It is not the hardest language to learn, so if you get the chance to learn a language while playing games, we say you should go for it! That is also how we learned English; by playing games and watching English content.

英語は今や「国際語」と言われるほど大切な言語です。

決して難しすぎる言語ではありませんし、ゲームをしながら楽しく学べる機会があるなら、ぜひ参加してほしいです！

At Englishland, you not only get to learn by playing, you get to do it under the guidance of experienced native teachers too, so it’s even better!

私たちもゲームをしたり、英語のコンテンツを見たりして英語を覚えました。

イングリッシュランドでは、ゲームをしながら学べるだけでなく、経験豊富なネイティブの先生たちと一緒に学べるので、より効果的です！
