In a small city like Ibara, you may be surprised to learn just how many campaigns and promotions are going on at any one time. One of the most exciting that we currently have going until the end of September, is the Ibara Donburi Stamp Rally!

But first, for the English speakers, let me explain the very clever inside reason for this the name of this promotion.

In Japanese, Ibara is spelt like so:

井原

It comes from 井 “i” (although in Japanese it has a “ee” sound) and 原 (“hara” but sometimes when placed after another kanji, we change the “h” to a “b”).

So 井 ‘ee’ 原 ‘bara’. 井原=Ibara.

Got it?

Great, next allow me to explain “donburi”. If you’re not familiar with Japanese cuisine, you may have never heard of donburi, but simply put, it is “a bowl of something served on top of rice”. The ‘something’ can be anything, beef, chicken, vegetables whatever you want, but the main characteristic is that it is a bowl of rice with something on top.

Hmm…Looks a little familiar, maybe? Where have we seen that before?

井原 Ibara

Donburi

井原 Ibara

Donburi

Yep, some clever person recognised that there is only 1 stroke difference between the first “letter” of Ibara and donburi in Japanese, and decided to capitalise on that. Hence, Ibara Donburi! (or Donbara as it’s sometimes called here!)

The city challenged all the restaurants, cafes and eating establishments in Ibara City to come up with their own version of donburi using at least 3 local ingredients from around our city and from March of this year, the Ibara Donburi “Stamp Rally” was born! If you go to at least 5 establishments and order the donburi, you will get the corresponding stamps and receive some FREE goods! The more places you visit, the better the gifts you can receive!

Currently, there are 28 establishments all across Ibara partaking in the promotion, which means at least 28 different versions of donburi to try!
