When it comes to the traditional Japanese arts, you’ve probably heard of Kabuki and Noh, right?
伝統的な日本の芸術と言えば、歌舞伎や能楽を聞いたことがあるかもしれませんね？
But did you know there is another kind of performance that is widely held in Japan?
でも、日本で広く行われている別の種類のパフォーマンスがあることを知っていますか？
It’s called kagura.
それが「神楽」と呼ばれるものです。
Originally a Shinto ritual ceremonial dance, and spelt 神楽 in Japanese kanji, it is literally named after its purpose of entertaining the Gods.
もともとは神道の儀式の一環として行われる舞踊で、漢字では「神楽」と書かれ、文字通り、神々を楽しませるための目的にちなんで名付けられています。
There are many types of kagura depending on the region of Japan that it is being performed in, but here in Ibara, we practice the Bicchu Kagura – owing to our location in the former Bicchu Province.
神楽には、日本の地域によってさまざまな種類がありますが、ここの井原市では、旧備中国に位置することから「備中神楽」を実践しています。
Bicchu Kagura is full of wild and fantastical tales of the Gods, battles and treachery, cunning plots and bravery. A typical programme entails a series of episodes, compiled together like chapters, showing the various stories of Japanese mythology.
備中神楽には、神々の野生的で幻想的な物語、戦いや裏切り、策略や勇気が満載です。典型的なプログラムは、さまざまな日本の神話の物語を章のようにまとめた一連のエピソードで構成されています。
It is hard to explain kagura unless you’ve experienced it. Not quite theatre and not just a choreographed dance, it is something firmly in between. When I first went to a showing in Bisei Town, I was awed by the extravagant costumes and props; the chants and beats of the drum that thrum through you; the delicate and precise positioning of the dancers’ bodies with their every move.
神楽を説明するのは難しいです。演劇でもなく、単なる踊りでもなく、その間にしっかりと位置するものです。初めて美星町の上演を見に行ったとき、華やかな衣装や小道具、太鼓の唱和とビートに圧倒されました。踊り手の身体の繊細で正確な動きは、彼らの一挙一動で感じられます。
Despite, quite frankly, not understanding the older style of Japanese used in the performance, I was enthralled. The dancers told a story with their bodies, making it easy to get the gist of the story. They captivated and commanded the attention of the small audience (Bisei Kagura Hall has a capacity of 40 people!) that surrounded the intimate stage on 3 sides.
正直なところ、演技に使われる古風な日本語を理解できなかったにもかかわらず、私は魅了されました。踊り手たちは身体で物語を語り、物語の要点を理解しやすくしてくれます。小さな観客（備成神楽ホールの定員は40人です！）に大注目でした。
Stepping into the fully wooden hall feels like stepping back in time and enjoying traditional Japanese entertainment the way they might have done back in the days of the samurai.
木造のホールに入ると、まるで時代を遡り、武士の時代における伝統的な日本のエンターテイメントを楽しんでいるかのような感覚に陥ります。
So if you want an authentic Japanese experience, if you want to see the real Japan and not just what is on the tourist trail, I cannot recommend kagura enough.
ですので、観光客の通りにあるものだけではなく、本物の日本の体験してみれば、神楽を強くお勧めします。
