Bento Making at Sengyo Fishmonger

This fishmonger is part of the Donburi network and is in the centre of Ibara, a 15-minute walk from the station. Every day, the fish is brought in from Kochi, a prefecture in Shikoku, south of Ibara. The fish of the day were respectively eel (Hamo), sea bream (Tai), wrasse (Bera), Japanese whiting (Kisu) and scorpion fish (Okoze).


As well as selling fish, the shop takes part in various events, including the "Oni matsuri", the demon festival in mid-October. To mark the occasion, they prepare packed lunches for primary schools. The special feature of these "bento" is the representation of a demon's head. 




Assembling the different foods to create your own bento, with raw fish, omelette and "nori" (seaweed), is a fun activity that requires a certain amount of concentration...
