About
Takiyama Canyon runs from the Hoshida Lake all the way down to the second Hoshida Dam, following the course of the Hoshida River.
Now we know most people will think we're crazy for saying this, but the most striking thing about the canyon is its potholes. There are about 40 potholes over just a few kilometres. And these are not your usual "rage-inducing" potholes you swerve to avoid while driving, these potholes have been formed by water from the lake rushing in and bringing small rocks with it. These small rocks then hit against the big rocks over and over again, forming potholes over tens of thousands of years.
The biggest potholes at the canyon are 80cm and 70cm wide, with a depth of 110cm. Like we said, not your average potholes - we'd like to see you try to run over these. But it should be said that it is also rare to have potholes this large in this type of rock, so these potholes act as an invaluable resource for scholars.
Interesting, right?
